I was approached by an independent game developer needing art in early 2018. Not knowing how much of a commitment I could make (not-yet taking a break from Nectira at the time, with talks of finishing Rogue Pawn with my brother around the same time), I was contracted to work on some very basic game art (player art, and a few blocks for this social, block-building game).
After a few months of minimal hours per week of artwork, I was impressed by how much of a following this niche-genre game had! The developer had HUNDREDS of future players, coming from games like Growtopia and Pixel Worlds, connected to Pixel Planet’s Discord page and waiting for game info and release news. The excitement around this project was captivating and I became somewhat invested in making this game the best it could be, in whatever ways I get to contribute. The developer and I decided to take me off the commissioned-art structure and become partners on this project. I believe in this project and what it can become!
It’s currently in Beta Access, with test servers coming up and down often, since there’s not a dedicated server or full release yet. I still only get to spend a few hours a week on it, trying to keep a steady “stream” of artwork, so the developer can add new items to the game world weekly.
Since the community is there, I’ve been known to pop into the Discord servers and even do some live streams of me working on art.
