October 2011

Doing more frequent, shorter posts is my new season’s resolution.  That way in the future, “the latest” will really be the latest and I’m not having to research my own life through picture folders and calendar notes just to do a post.  Haha.  Anyway, here’s what has been going on with us this past month or so:
House Progress:

Our main focus lately has been to catch the back room of the studio up to the front room.  Yep, we made it!  It took a lot of work tearing out the old ceiling, building the inner walls the rest of the way up and so on, but in short, we got the room to feel almost “healed” of being an old crusty garage/basement.

Same room, other side
It’ll be fun, this next month, to finish up the rest of the studio!

Jess’ parents also came down to help knock out a lot more of our master bathroom.  Bill and I spent probably most of two days “playing” with plumbing lines down beneath the bathroom and up underneath the cabinets… and of course, installing a new vanity (two reconstructed together into one), counter top, sinks, mirror, lights, caulking, etc.

Music Pre-Production:

Aside from playing at StonePoint most weekends, Jess and I really haven’t been doing much with music until this past month.  Still unable to start with the actual recording process, we’ve been taking advantage of a few free mornings a week to get started on some Pre-Production.

As you may be able to see from the list we’ve been working through, we’re about half way done with this phase; building a solid base for each song as we dig into them.  We’re really focusing on making these songs (previously “my songs”) become “our songs”.  By talking through the core message/ tone/ feeling behind each song, we’ve then been reworking lyrics a little bit, arranging vocal parts, practicing each song a few times, then recording our raw performances with some temporary digital drums.

Once we move on to the next phase of recording (tracking) we’ll already know “what we’re going for” with each track. At that point, it should just be a matter of performance and creativity (the fun stuff), followed by mixing and post-production.

Some Work!

Apparently applying for over a dozen jobs and not even hearing back from most of them is common around here.  All the jobs I’ve ever been given have been through people I’ve known, so it felt unnatural and frustrating to even do what I was forcing my self to do.  I know the Lord is taking care of every detail of our lives, but it’s still really tempting to make everything ridiculously scary and infuriating by pretending I’m my own provider.  He always opens the right doors, at the right time.

Speaking of which, my friend Ted, who was recently  laid off at Delta Airlines, simultaneously came across an opportunity to open up a store with his (and now my) friend Ken.  They’ve both been really great for giving me some hours, first in helping to setup their store (building furniture, setting up shelves and decor, etc.), and now in keeping new stock built/displayed and doing a few deliveries a week.

We’re still working out the details of how I can be an actual employee (which is really great of Ted and Ken to figure out and offer to me) but in the meantime, I’m really thankful that I’ve been able to be a part of their new exciting business start-up and get to have a couple cool guys to work with during the week.

…and Even Adventure:

As part of our Fall traditions, we took a trip down to a nearby state park (apparently a relatively new one on the Chattahoochee River).  We had fun walking around through trails in the woods and next to the river.

Along the way, I found this guy and almost made him my pet:

Because of laws I heard about once, I wasn’t sure if I could actually keep it.  Jess also explained that it’s okay to own pets that come from the store, because they’ve only known captivity, but to catch a wild creature and take away its experienced freedom is messed up.  I saw her point and have been since been doing some research.  I released the shelled minion into a nearby fortress.

…and not much else happened since last time…  Thank you for checkin’ out our lives.  Please feel free to leave a comment on this post, or the facebook link that probably led you here.
